AI outreach is trash

AI outreach is trash

As a CEO of a company, I get a lot of outreach from salespeople and business owners. I'm just going to say, a lot of it is trash.

I wanted to highlight why I think so much of it is junk, so you avoid making the same mistake.

This is a message I received today:

You might be thinking, "Dean, this is thoughtful, personalised and shows they did their homework" but it really isn't, let me break down why this and most outreach fails.

  1. It's weird personalisation: The messages quote information back to me, like they have done research, but it doesn't really make a point. Ok, so you read my book or my post and you've looked at my business - so what?
  2. It's overly complex: If you look at the sentence structure, the way it's written is overly clever with very high cognitive load. As I read what your saying I have to think what it means - what is this message asking? When AI drafts messages it talks about things conceptually which nobody is thinking about - It sounds clever, but you need to break down the sentence to understand what it's saying.
  3. The questions are irrelevant: Often the questions are qualifiers which this or that, they feel contrived, as I read them, I have to force an answer. The questions feel off somehow and I can feel it.
  4. Performative writing: The writing feels clever, it doesn't feel human written. I can't explain what it is, it just doesn't feel right. It has hints of corporate nonsense, abstract language and it just feels like the person writing it doesn't understand what they are writing.

Here is another example:

The same issues crop up.

  • High cognitive load.
  • Personalisation which doesn't feel connected to the message.
  • Abstract language.

The real problem with AI written messages.

The problem I find with AI written messages is that AI writes in abstract language, it doesn't feel like a conversation. It relies to heavily on complex language you'd never use face-to-face, words like "leverage," "alignment," "impact." Words that name categories instead of things.

You read it and it sounds great, because you already know what you meant. Your own meaning fills in the words. The recipient doesn't have your meaning. They just get the words. And the words are empty.
